Our Story — Grain-to-Glass Craft Spirits, Fort Worth Texas

Est. 2019

Made in Texas
Enjoyed Everywhere

Founded in 2019 by lawyer-turned-chef-turned-distiller Markus Kypreos, Blackland Distillery began in Fort Worth's Foundry District with a bold vision and a passion for craft. Led by master distiller Ezra Cox, Blackland developed a full lineup of vodka, gin, bourbon, and rye, quickly gaining momentum and expanding distribution across Texas and beyond.

New releases like Texas Pecan Brown Sugar Bourbon, Prairie Gold, and Texpresso Whiskey, alongside a strategic partnership with Terlato Wine Group, fueled continued growth. By 2025, Blackland achieved nationwide distribution, earning a reputation for quality and innovation, one it continues to build on today.

The Name

Blackland
Prairie

The name "Blackland" is a nod to the Blackland Prairie, a rich Texas ecoregion stretching from San Antonio to Fort Worth, and the source of the grains we use in our spirits. It also reflects a deeper connection to the land's history, where natural lightning fires once charred the prairie soil. That same charring process plays a vital role in how we age our spirits today, in carefully charred oak barrels. It's a name rooted in place, process, and the elements that shape great whiskey.

The Process

All-In On
Innovation

Blackland incorporates a modern, tech-focused approach to traditional distilling processes, producing clean, vibrant new tastes in its small-batch spirits. Contrary to traditional distilling methods that focus on old-world techniques and extensive aging processes, Blackland distills its spirits using high-tech hardware, computerized pot and column stills (referred to as iStills), and stainless-steel mash tuns.

Grain to Glass

Texas
Grains

All grains used in Blackland spirits are sourced exclusively from Fort Worth-based TexMalt, which partners with local Texas farms to grow, produce, and source high-quality malted grains. After the distillation process is complete, Blackland returns the spent grains back to Texas farmers to be utilized as cattle feed and fertilizer. It's a thoughtful, closed-loop approach that reflects our commitment to quality, sustainability, and the communities we call home.

Purity

In Every
Drop

Clean water is the foundation of our spirits, shaping every note of flavor, texture, and finish. Before it ever touches our grain, we put our water through a rigorous three-stage purification process: salt-water filtration softens the water by stripping out harsh minerals; reverse osmosis eliminates contaminants and impurities at the molecular level; and our slow-drip, 72-hour carbon filtration draws out chlorine, odors, and off-notes. The result? A base so clean, every ingredient can speak for itself.
